A live studio recording of songs from ‘Farewell Angelina’
(A tribute show to the iconic folk duo of the 60’s – Joan Baez and Bob Dylan).

Suzette Herft and Patrick Evans have been working together as a duo since late 2014. Whilst they are both award winning songwriters and performers in their own right, they discovered a special magic when they combined their talents. Together they create a magical musical experience with their blend of harmonies and instruments. Following on from Suzette’s successful tribute show ‘Shining’, that celebrates the life and times of Joan Baez through story and song, Suzette and Patrick thought that a show focusing on the story of the coupling of Baez & Dylan would be worth telling in its own right.

In 1963, as the reigning ‘Queen of Folk’, Baez’s endorsement of the young promising songwriter played a huge role in Dylan’s early rise to fame. Dylan states “…something told me that she was my counterpart, that she was the one my voice would find perfect harmony with…” (Chronicles. Vol.1.) These duets of Baez and Dylan resonated with audiences. We hope that these duets created by Suzette and Patrick, have struck a similar resonant note.

Roses

A new release by Suzette Herft, currently receiving rave reviews and produced by award winning producer and guitarist Shane O'Mara. Roses is a collection of songs from the highway of life... traversing grief and finding beauty... all amidst jangly guitars, and atmospheric twangy telecaster sounds, echoing the mood of Patty Griffin and the guitar work of our very own Buddy Miller and Ry Cooder (Shane O'Mara). It sits well in the Americana genre with great songwriting and sublime vocals from Suzette Herft.

Both Sides Now

Suzette Herft

This album is about the journey of mid-life. It is about finding yourself in a space that is not quite pleasant - looking back at what has been and what might have been; looking at where you are now and what is to come; asking for the grace to accept what is and the courage to move forward in hope - "something's lost but something's gained in living everyday" (Both Sides Now -Joni Mitchell)

Thanks to Hugh for his brilliant musicianship, friendship and production; Thanks to Kathryn and the crew at The Quiet Man for the great singing sessions and the opportunity to find my voice and share my songs; Thanks to my family for their unfailing support and optimism especially in my times of despair; And thanks to you who continue to support me in my music by buying my albums and coming out to hear me sing. My love to you all. Suzette.

Shining - A Diamond in the Rust

Suzette Herft

Shining – A Diamond in the Rust is a tribute show celebrating the life and times of one of the most inspiring and incredible singers in our lifetime. Known as the ‘Madonna’ and the ‘Queen of Hearts’, Joan Baez captured our hearts with her beautiful voice and her strong commitment to non-violence and social justice.

‘Shining’ was written to commemorate the occasion of 50 years of public performance that Joan celebrated in late 2008. In this show, I weave together the stories and songs that made Joan a folk-icon and a warrior of the light.

I have always been a great fan of Joan Baez. I admire her beautiful singing voice and the way she uses her voice to sing songs that challenge, comfort, inspire and heal. This is something that I aspire to do with my singing voice as well.

This show made its debut in 2009 at the National Folk Festival in Canberra, and received a standing ovation. It has continued to touch many people at various performances over the last few years. I would like to think that by taking this show on the road, we are reminded of Joan’s remarkable commitment to social justice and peace, her enormous capacity for compassion, and her contribution and invitation to a life of social meaning.

This album contains the songs recorded live from the show that was performed at The Burke & Wills Folk Festival in 2012. It was recorded by Graham Wilson via Andrew Pattison’s sound desk…. so you get all the ‘live’ pops and squeaks and imperfections of voice and nervous fumbling on guitar as well…. Hopefully, listening to this cd takes you back to hearing the show as it was presented when you first heard it. The songs I choose to sing in the show complement the story that precedes it.

My heartfelt thanks to Andrew Pattison for his belief in me; the Troubadour Foundation for enabling this project to happen; Graham Wilson, (a wonderful performer and recording engineer - Border Studios, Ph 0439 924 453) for the many hours he spent trying to sort the recording of the whole show into something that you would be able to listen to on cd; Trevor Pearson for the photograph taken at The Burke & Wills Festival, and for tidying up some of the ‘pops’ and squeaks; David Briggs for mastering and Ramona Tilley for cd design and artwork.

My heartfelt thanks also to all of you who support my music by attending gigs, buying cds and most of all for your words of encouragement. I look forward to saying hello the next time I see you.

Much love, Suzette

Never Too Late

Suzette Herft

This was my debut album. It contains the songs that I had written in my early years and performed at various folk venues when I was first starting out. It also features one of the very first (proper) songs I wrote at the age of 19, which I still get requests for to this day... 'Song of a Refugee'.
